Q. Why does the spacing in my e-mail look funny?
A. Using the Return key unnecessarily in an e-mail may cause odd spacing. When writing e-mail, you do not need to hit the Return key at the end of every line as you would with a typewriter. E-mail text will drop down to the next line automatically when you reach the far right side of the screen. Press the Return key to indicate the start of a new paragraph.
Q. How can I put hyperlinks in my e-mail messages?
A. You can put a hyperlink in an e-mail message by typing the entire address of the Web site you want to provide a link to, including the protocol used to access the site (generally, http://).
For example, if you want to send a friend the link to the New York Times, simply type the complete address: http://www.nytimes.com/
Depending on the e-mail system he or she uses, the recipient of your message should be able to click on the link to go directly to the site.
Q. How can I set my box to alert me of new e-mail messages?
A. You can use the Message Watch feature to check for messages once a day. If any user on your account has unread messages, the red light on the front of your box will turn on. To set up Message Watch:
- Log on as the Primary user of your account
- Choose Mail
- Choose Settings
- Choose Message Light
- Choose the time of day from the menu
- Choose Done
|
Your box will check for new messages once a day at the approximate time you choose. If the phone line is in use at that time, the box will not be able to check for messages.
Q. Why didn't the Message Light go on when I had new messages?
A. The Message Light feature checks for mail only once a day, at a set time. If you receive new mail after this time, the Message Light won't go on.
For example, let's say that you have your Message Light set for 10 p.m. At that time we check for mail but find no new messages, so the red light stays off. Aunt Pearl then sends you a message at 5 a.m. the next morning. When you check the box at 11 a.m. that same morning, the red light is still off, even though you have a new message. What happened?
Message Light checked for new mail at 10 p.m., hours before Aunt Pearl sent her message. If you had set the Message Light to check for messages at 10 a.m., the light would have been on when you checked at 11 a.m.
The moral of the story: It is better to set the Message Light to check for messages right before you usually go online. That way it will alert you of messages before you log on.
Q. What is POP3 Remote Mail access?
A. If you have a non-MSN TV service e-mail account, POP3 Remote Mail access may allow you to read that e-mail via your MSN TV service. In order for the Remote Mail feature to work, this second e-mail program must support the correct protocol, called the Post Office Protocol.
Q. How do I use the POP3?
A. To set up the POP3 Remote Mail feature:
- Choose Mail from your Home page
- Choose Settings
- Choose Remote mail
|
After a brief explanation of this feature you will be asked for the following information:
- POP3 username
The first part of your computer e-mail address (the portion before the @ symbol)
- POP3 password
The one you use to access mail from your computer, not your MSN TV service password.
- POP3 server name
Ask your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for the server name if you don't know.
|
Now, place a check in the box next to Leave message on server to keep a copy of your e-mail on your ISP's server. This way, you can still check these messages from your computer. If you choose to leave this box blank, any e-mail you fetch from the server will be deleted from that account and will remain visible on your MSN TV service account only.
Q. Can I check my MSN TV e-mail from a computer using POP3?
A. Yes. To do this, you must either:
- Be a member of Hotmail, which is a free e-mail service based on the Internet
- Have Outlook on your personal computer
- Have Outlook Express on your personal computer
|
Eudora, Netscape, and other e-mail packages or Internet browsers, are not always compatible. This may change in the future. For now, only Hotmail, Outlook, and Outlook Express will always be able to read MSN TV service mail from a computer.
Help has detailed instructions on how to make the MSN TV service -computer connection if you have Hotmail, Outlook, or Outlook Express. To access these instructions, go to the Detailed Instructions section of Remote Mail Help:
- Choose Help from your Web home page
- Choose Remote Mail listed under Tips and Tricks
- Choose Detailed Instructions

Q. How can I change my e-mail address?
A. To change your e-mail address, you must add a new user. You may need to delete an old user to free up space for the new one.
You may have up to 6 users on your account, including your primary user. There is no extra charge for adding users.
Important: If you delete a user, even by accident, it cannot be used again. You will lose all of that user's saved e-mail, Favorites and settings. This is done for security purposes, to ensure that another person won't choose the user name you deleted and start receiving e-mail intended for you.
Q. How can I change my Mail Name?
A. The Mail Name is the name that appears next to your e-mail address when you send a message. Only the Primary user can change each user Mail Name.
To change your mail name:
- Log on as the Primary user
- Choose Settings
- Choose Mail
- Choose Mail Name
- Follow the onscreen directions
|
Q. Why was there a delay in receiving my e-mail?
A. While most e-mail arrives within minutes of being sent, it can sometimes take longer. E-mail travels through a maze of phone lines and computer networks before it reaches its final destination. For example, If anywhere along this route a phone line goes down or a computer becomes overloaded the e-mail may be delayed.
Q. Why was my message never received?
A. One possibility is that you addressed the message incorrectly. If the message was sent within the last week, you can check the address again to see if you entered the information correctly. To locate the sent message, first set up your Extra Features option in Mail, and then:
- Choose Mail
- Choose Storage
- Choose Sent
- Choose the message in question and check the address.
|
If the address was typed incorrectly you can forward the message using the correct address.
If you found the e-mail address in an Internet phone book, keep in mind that the address may not be current.
Q. Why was the message I sent returned to me?
A. Here are some possible reasons:
- Typically, an e-mail message is returned to you when the recipient's address does not exist as you typed it. Check the entire address and make sure you have the correct name (name before the @ symbol) and the correct domain (name after the @ symbol). Upper and lower case letters do not matter.
- The user you are trying to reach may have a full mailbox. This will cause the message you send to bounce back.
- Some people, in order to send untraceable Spam, send e-mail out with invalid user name. The e-mail will arrive with what looks like a valid e-mail address, when in fact it is forged and goes nowhere. Thus, when you reply to the e-mail, either to request removal from their mailing list or to get more information about whatever they are selling, it has nowhere to go and gets bounced back to your mailbox.
- If you found the e-mail address in an Internet phone book, keep in mind that the address may not be current. You may also have an e-mail message returned to you if the intended recipient is an MSN TV user whose mailbox is full.
|
Q. How do I read a bounced message?
A. The following error messages provide clues as to why an e-mail was returned or bounced:
- The incoming mailbox is full for user (user name). This person is not able to receive more mail at the present time. -
Indicates that a user's mail box is full and therefore cannot receive messages.
- Host Unknown -
Indicates that the address after the @ sign does not exist as you typed it. For example you may have written webt.net instead of webtv.net. This is a common mistake.
- User Unknown -
Indicates that everything after the @ symbol is OK, but the information before the @ symbol does not denote a real user.
- Cannot Send Mail For Five Days -
Indicates a problem delivering the message, possibly because of mail-sorter problems.
- No Data Known -
No reason stated why the e-mail could not be delivered.
- Account Disabled -
Indicates that the account exists but cannot receive e-mail.
- If you need to re-address the e-mail:
- Choose Edit Message. ( You may need to scroll down to view this option )
- Make the necessary changes to the message.
- Choose Send
